AM I DISTURBING YOUR SLEEP (R.Brady) Barefoot and beaded and although I’ve got good reason, I see I make you feel a little uncomfortable. I might keep my politics to myself if your politics weren’t screwing with this planet’s health. And I might shut my mouth if you’d open your mind and surrender your fears because they’re making you blind. Am I disturbing your sleep? Would you prefer that I creep around you silently while the world comes tumbling down? Am I disturbing your sleep with things you don’t want to see? Pardon me if reality is trashing your dreams. Am I disturbing your sleep?

26 03:23
26 I know this sounds like it should be love song. Would you believe me if I said it is? Except this time my heart is breaking under a weight not all my own doing, but from a love lost and broken by the collective. But how could we know how to hold a gift like this you know it was doomed right from the start with all the rules, hidden from view, and here we are, stumbling around in the dark. For a fleeting second the sunlight streams down on me and I can tell myself that this world knows no pain. But then I open my eyes and see the lies more clearly than I’ve ever seen anything in my life - how we sleep, follow like sheep, somewhere between our desires and our empty dreams – and we think they’re real and by that we think we feel but we don’t see, we don’t hear, we don’t feel , we don’t really love because on and on we sleep…dancers in a dream never realizing things are hardly as they seem. But if you open your eyes you’ll see the lies more clearly than you’ve ever seen anything in your life – all the sweet whispers we speak – the things we tell ourselves so we can get to sleep at night – all the lies – sweet sugar dipped – diamond tipped.

SOMEWHERE SUNHINE Hey you come and sit for a bit next to me. I’ll find a way to make you smile. And if I can’t lift your mood with my tune then I’ll just have to keep on trying. Your day may be grey and lonely but I can’t let you sit there with a frown. Come here come here let me whisper in your ear I’ll find a way to turn that damn thing upside down. Somewhere the sun is always shining. The sun is always shining somewhere. I refuse to make way for the blues – there’s no poetry in misery for me since I grew myself a little bit of happy. The rain may be coming down, dark clouds hanging overhead…but that doesn’t mean I can’t find a little sunshine in my heart and in my head so I just keep searching…you know I keep searching for the sun because I know somewhere it’s always shining. I know it’s always shining somewhere. It’s always shining somewhere.

NO SMALL THING I used to say if I ever met anyone that looked anything at all like you I’d be forced to admit that miracles do indeed come true. You’re the everything I thought I’d never find on that impossible list I keep in my head. You’re the lead in my pencil, you’re the sugar in my tea – you’re the rhyme, you’re the rhythm and the melody. In case you were starting to doubt it I’m here to shout it in your face: you are the place that I call home. Just remember this ring on my finger – it’s no small thing – it’s everything that you mean to me when I’m thinking and dreaming of home. Thanks to you I’m a fool tooling down the potholed highway of love. I’m dancing with disaster and chaos is my friend and I don’t care what’s coming at me ’round the bend when I’m living underneath your rainbow in an amplified, everloving, technicolour dream. I’m smiling like a child in a world made of candy while everyone goes crazy around me. And you remind me of the light. You remind me of what’s good in my life. In case you were starting to doubt it I’m here to shout it in your face: You’re the place that I call home. Just remember this ring on my finger is no small thing – it’s everything that you mean to me when I’m thinking and dreaming of home.

Gratitude 04:13
GRATITUDE I heard the news today - it was hard to believe it - I could hardly believe it…. inevitability my old friend you’ve opened my eyes again. Another one falls from the ranks and I step out of time I stop to reflect on the way light sits on the leaves after heavy rain. All these things we might never think to miss are the keys that will free us from our unrequited bliss so I take all the time I want to just sit and appreciate the view – and in the space you left behind I find gratitude. You know we’re all watching the clock tick tock transfixed as if it’s counting down the time and running out the days. We’re racing and running to get to a place where we don’t really want to be – is the irony lost on you. I slow myself down to the rhythm of things that are timeless – lingering in the quiet wisdom of trees and clouds and I take all the time I want to jus sit and appreciate the view. In the space that grows inside I find gratitude. For MB and HL

PRODIGAL DAUGHTER The prodigal daughter returns in a cloud of dust of her iniquities…And as all good sinners must, finds herself humbled at her father’s feet. She says i’d ask you to welcome me back but it’s apparent to me now that I never left. He said am I to assume then, in your travels you’ve started to understand where we’re at? And she says yes – yes I see….like a light illuminating every part of me and thee, I was blind for a time & it’s taken me a while but father, I am starting to see. He says: my love for you never changes child. You can’t ‘please’ or ‘displease’ me. You can only do yourself The disservice of taking steps that lead you away or back to me. Do you see what I mean? And she says: Oh yes I see. Like a light illuminating every thread of secrecy. I was blind for a time and it’s taken me a while but father, I am starting to see. He says good because I’d rather have you in my circle of love but like any good parent I can’t just push and shove and though I’d hate for you to think you’re alone every child makes their own way home - just follow my voice. Or don’t. You see, it’s all about choice. But remember what I said when you’re running around inside your head: MY LOVE NEVER CHANGES…IT’S UNCONDITIONAL BY ITS VERY NATURE. Just remember what I said…It’s up to you if you want it. It’s up to you if you feel it. It’s up to you to receive it - It’s always been up to you.

GIVE ME DIRTY HANDS They turned away when blacks swung in the breeze, noosed at the neck from the branch of a tree. They walked past Treblinka with their eyes to the ground – compliant and silent – not a sound. They dine just out of sight of the slaughterhouse door and then muse loud on love and the tragedy of war but their hands are never dirty and their eyes are closed so tight and the deed is passed on and excuses are made so they can sleep at night. They say “kill” but their blood never spills and their body won’t go to ground. And they will stand in the palace their lips red from the chalice, grinning and greedy and deaf to the sounds of the battlefield’s screams and the death of young dreams that they call making men. And I wait… I wait for their empire to crumble so the lovers can rebuild again because their hands are never dirty and their eyes are closed so tight and the deed is passed on and excuses are made so they can sleep at night – no your hands are never dirty and you close your eyes so tight and you will reason with impunity while you can watch while others die. Will we conveniently see nothing and then assume our consciences are clean? Will we pass here unnoticed to the strains of blood-curdling screams? Ignorance is so far from bliss when it’s as blind as this – so give me dirty hands.

HEAVEN UNDER YOUR FEET This is not another song about all the troubles in the world – I write a lot of those these days. And this is not another love song about a boy and a girl – although it could be I suppose. It’s only the song of my soul and I’m sharing it with you and if you care to listen, these are the breathings of my heart, the things I need to help me make it through. I’m talking about love and peace compassion and divinity, appreciation gratitude and humility, be the key, that opens up the door to your heart. If you ask me the way to peace I say growing heaven underneath your very own feet is a good place to start. This is not another song about sex cash cars bitches or bling. It’s about the things you find when you’re blind and you fall on your ass and the things you thought would remain come to pass and leave you with nothing. Nothing but love faith peace compassion and divinity, tolerance and providence and responsibility be the key that opens up the door to love. If you want peace you count your blessings every day because you never know when your time here is done. This is the end of my song It wasn’t long, I know, but thank you for hearing me out. I hope it leaves you with a little something to take home, something to think about - Maybe something like love faith peace compassion and integrity, dignity humility and accountability. Don’t look outside – turn your gaze in. Heaven’s under your feet – that’s where it begins – peace out comes from peace in. If you want to find some peace outside you have to make some peace in. Heaven’s underneath your feet.

Redeemed 03:33
REDEEMED Wild and wired, restless and driven, tripping on things that never existed before and you wait, and you hope like hell to be lifted from this puzzle where so many pieces are missing, and the answers don’t answer the question you’re living – they just hint at that mystery that sits patiently at your door. And maybe there are signs but you don’t see them. And maybe there are clues but you can’t read them – so where to from here….Staggering, stumbling, knees scratched and bleeding – don’t know about help but you know you want freedom but you’re not really sure if you even know what it is. God knows there were times when you thought you were free – turns out that the chains were just harder to see because the jewels on the wall of your prison were beautiful and you were blinded. And maybe there was a light but you couldn’t see it. And you knew what was right but you couldn’t reach it. But you knew you were climbing for good reason. Because the view from the top of this mountain is sweet. And maybe you’re the light but you just don’t see it. And you were born to shine bright but afraid to receive it. The lesson this time is just to believe that everything’s fine – you’re divine – and redeemed. You’re redeemed.

THE STORY OF WHO WE REALLY ARE There are so many problems in the world today - it’d be a whole lot easier if I could turn away and say I don’t see them but that option isn’t open to me. But that’s okay - who wants to be blind and comfortable anyway? Who wants to live their whole life running from pain and change - I guess there are some but I don’t want to be one of them. I’d rather be one of the ones who opens up their heart and eyes and mind the best they can – leaves a legacy of love upon the sands of time that define the story – the story of who we really are. I’m a child of god and so are you. Trees, rocks and rivers all resonate the truth of the one spirit with the many names – call it what you want but to me it’s all the same. Can’t you see it’s all the same? We’re only the mirror for the flame and it’s no more than a name. What we are is one small piece of a greater puzzle and I refuse to accept a destiny of strife and struggle. It’s time to find a new paradigm and rewrite the story of who we really are. So take a pen and take a minute to rewrite this day without the past in it. Take back your potential from the hands of time to write the words “good” and “wise” and “kind”. And open up your heart and eyes and mind the best you can. Be a beacon in a dark and lonely land. Tell your story so that others understand that what we are is one small piece of an infinite puzzle and yet we’re standing in the middle of all this self created trouble. It’s time to find a new paradigm and rewrite the story of who we really are.

THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE We’ve been walking in the cold for what seems like hours – I can’t feel my feet and I want a hot shower – I’m young, somewhere around 21, he wears coke bottle glasses, he’s American. We’re standing under an orange streetlight outside his apartment it’s November and now the first snowflakes start to fall in slow motion silence down out of the dark – jim, out of everything this moment is burned into my heart. Along with apple cinnamon tea, red wine , bright autumn colours, fresh snow 10 feet deep man I remember all of it. We surely drove each other crazy on the way to being sane but we forgave each other’s weaknesses again and again. And I was brash and reckless – you were tired of illusions and dreams – the dance was drunken and helpless but not without its beauty. The snow melted into a memory and now I’m living in the sun with another blue eyed American strangely enough. And I would think that those days were lived by someone else but for all of these moments lined up on this shelf in my heart a little dog eared a little faded but yet, clear enough to make me smile, sharp enough not to forget that I was loud and full of fire - And you were patient with my youth. And wherever you are right now – and for what it’s worth – thank you. Thank you for the love. From the bottom of my heart: thank you. For JM.

about

Rachael Brady Sydney, Australia

Rachael Brady has one of those voices you only find in singers grounded by their guts into a life deeply & often messily lived.
It isn't sweet, high or perfect.
It’s a voice that sings its scars & imperfections.
It’ll probably sing some of yours too.
Brady is currently (2022) recording her 4th studio album "Bears, Witches & Wolves" with Blue Mountains based producer Josh Schuberth.
